1 week over the limit: £86.45 at risk

Current rules remove the whole weekly payment when counted earnings exceed the limit. 1 weeks and £86.45 are potentially at risk before averaging.

Most favourable illustration: Without averaging, 1 weeks over and £86.45 at risk. Averaging does not reduce the amount at risk in these figures. DWP must decide whether averaging is appropriate.

Planned taper preview only: announced for England and Wales during 2030–31, not current law. It reduces CA by £1 for each £1 above the limit. The preview uses each week’s rates, excludes tax and other benefit effects, and is not a household gain.

## Benefit weeks (without averaging)

| CA week | Counted earnings | Limit | Status | At risk | Planned taper |
|---|---:|---:|---|---:|---:|
| 9 Nov 2026 – 15 Nov 2026 | £165.00 | £204.00 | Within limit | £0.00 | £86.45 |
| 16 Nov 2026 – 22 Nov 2026 | £175.00 | £204.00 | Within limit | £0.00 | £86.45 |
| 23 Nov 2026 – 29 Nov 2026 | £380.00 | £204.00 | Over | £86.45 | £0.00 |
| 30 Nov 2026 – 6 Dec 2026 | £170.00 | £204.00 | Within limit | £0.00 | £86.45 |

## Averaging

Without averaging: 1 weeks over; £86.45 at risk. Each pay packet is converted to a weekly amount. Earnings affect the following benefit week (DMG 60051).

Your 4-week cycle: 4 weeks over; £345.80 at risk. Illustration using complete consecutive blocks from the first earnings week. Unpaid weeks stay unpaid; incomplete blocks use actual pay. DWP decides whether this period is representative.

Five-week averaging: 1 weeks over; £86.45 at risk. Illustration using complete consecutive blocks from the first earnings week. Unpaid weeks stay unpaid; incomplete blocks use actual pay. DWP decides whether this period is representative.

## Headroom

£34.00 net; about £34.00 gross; 2.62 hours. Estimated next-pay ceiling (same period): £154.00 gross. Latest gross above this ceiling: £0.00 (about 0.00 hours). Extra pension to address the current breach: £0.00. Benefit week 30 Nov 2026; latest available earnings. Gross pay and hours are estimates for extra employed pay, holding pension, expenses and care costs fixed. The next-pay ceiling is for Bar shifts (weekly), with the same trading-period length, using estimated tax/NI, the same pension, expenses and care charges (with the care cap recalculated), and other jobs unchanged. It excludes one-off and termination adjustments. If other jobs alone exceed the limit, no next-pay amount can bring the total under it. Amounts are rounded down to whole gross pennies. DWP deducts half of a pension contribution: each £1 reduces counted earnings by 50p.

## Next steps

1. 27 Nov 2026: Today: tell the Carer’s Allowance Unit about your pay, including the payment on 27 Nov 2026. Report online at https://www.gov.uk/carers-allowance-report-change or call 0800 731 0297. Keep a record of what you report.
2. 27 Nov 2026: Today: keep every payslip, pension payment record and receipt for work expenses and care costs.
3. 27 Nov 2026: Before accepting extra work: compare the extra pay with your headroom and ask DWP how they will count it.
4. 27 Nov 2026: If you receive Universal Credit: update your journal when Carer’s Allowance changes. It counts in full as unearned income; the carer element has different rules.

## Historic reassessment

No past overpayment entered. The reassessment concerns earnings-related overpayments involving fluctuating earnings between 10 Apr 2015 and 2 Sep 2025.

## Other conditions

- Care for one person at least 35 hours a week (the caring week starts on Sunday).
- The person cared for receives a qualifying benefit, such as PIP daily living or Attendance Allowance.
- You are aged 16 or over.
- You are not in full-time education; the 21-hour rule includes directed study and relevant course activities.
- Check residence, immigration conditions and whether another carer already claims for the same person.
- State Pension overlaps: at £86.45 a week or more there is no CA payment, but underlying entitlement may help with other benefits.
- Scotland uses Carer Support Payment, currently with the same earnings limit; the planned taper does not cover Scotland. Northern Ireland has its own system.
- Universal Credit counts Carer’s Allowance in full as unearned income. A claim can also affect benefits of the person you care for.
- Earnings during an allowed temporary break in caring may be ignored (DMG 60052). Ask DWP to confirm any such break.

## Assumptions

- This is an earnings check, not an award decision. All other entitlement conditions still apply.
- Pay date is assumed to be the contractual due date unless you give a due date. Monthly attribution runs to the benefit week before the next normal due date.
- Benefit weeks start on Monday unless Wednesday is selected for Constant Attendance Allowance. Earnings affect the following week.
- Full precision is kept through deductions and conversion. The final fraction of a penny is disregarded in your favour (DMG 15013).
- Averaging is discretionary. Complete consecutive blocks are illustrations, not a DWP agreement or an entitlement to the most favourable result. Unpaid weeks remain unpaid (DMG 15453).
- No figures are stored unless you choose to create a share link. Shared reports last 180 days and anyone with the link can read them.
