Averaging illustration — DWP must agreeWithout averaging

Current rules remove the whole weekly payment when counted earnings exceed the limit. 1 weeks and £86.45 are potentially at risk before averaging.

Most favourable illustration: Without averaging, 1 weeks over and £86.45 at risk. Averaging does not reduce the amount at risk in these figures. DWP must decide whether averaging is appropriate.

Planned taper preview only: announced for England and Wales during 2030–31, not current law. It reduces CA by £1 for each £1 above the limit. The preview uses each week’s rates, excludes tax and other benefit effects, and is not a household gain.

Could averaging help?

DWP decides whether averaging fairly reflects your earnings. The lowest figure is an illustration you can discuss, not an agreed award.

Without averaging

1 weeks over · £86.45

Each pay packet is converted to a weekly amount. Earnings affect the following benefit week (DMG 60051).

Your 4-week cycle

4 weeks over · £345.80

Illustration using complete consecutive blocks from the first earnings week. Unpaid weeks stay unpaid; incomplete blocks use actual pay. DWP decides whether this period is representative.

Five-week averaging

1 weeks over · £86.45

Room for more work

£34.00 extra net pay a week, about £34.00 gross or 2.62 extra hours.

Estimated next-pay ceiling: £154.00 gross for the same pay period.

Benefit week 30 Nov 2026; latest available earnings. Gross pay and hours are estimates for extra employed pay, holding pension, expenses and care costs fixed. The next-pay ceiling is for Bar shifts (weekly), with the same trading-period length, using estimated tax/NI, the same pension, expenses and care charges (with the care cap recalculated), and other jobs unchanged. It excludes one-off and termination adjustments. If other jobs alone exceed the limit, no next-pay amount can bring the total under it. Amounts are rounded down to whole gross pennies. DWP deducts half of a pension contribution: each £1 reduces counted earnings by 50p.

Other conditions to check

Assumptions and sources
  • This is an earnings check, not an award decision. All other entitlement conditions still apply.
  • Pay date is assumed to be the contractual due date unless you give a due date. Monthly attribution runs to the benefit week before the next normal due date.
  • Benefit weeks start on Monday unless Wednesday is selected for Constant Attendance Allowance. Earnings affect the following week.
  • Full precision is kept through deductions and conversion. The final fraction of a penny is disregarded in your favour (DMG 15013).
  • Averaging is discretionary. Complete consecutive blocks are illustrations, not a DWP agreement or an entitlement to the most favourable result. Unpaid weeks remain unpaid (DMG 15453).
  • No figures are stored unless you choose to create a share link. Shared reports last 180 days and anyone with the link can read them.

Use the API

POST /api/check with JSON returns an earnings report without saving. Minimal example:

{"country":"England","jobs":[{"label":"Main job","type":"employed","periods":[{"payDate":"2026-11-06","kind":"weekly","gross":190,"tax":0,"ni":0}]}]}

Optional: cycleWeeks, otherWeeks, hourlyRate and overpayment. Every period supports pension, expenses, care, dueDate, one-off amounts, and estimateTaxNI. Self-employed periods need start/end dates and gross means trading profit before tax and pension. Dates are YYYY-MM-DD; amounts are pounds. Use at most six jobs, 120 periods and 64 KB.

POST /api/share with the same input saves a report for 180 days. Read at /r/:id, add .md or .csv to download, or use /api/r/:id for JSON. /api/samples has complete examples; /api/health reports service health.
